Starbase, the SpaceX company town on the Texas Gulf Coast that officially incorporated as a city in May 2025, is standing up its first police department — and the fleet of choice is exactly what you'd expect: Tesla Cybertrucks.
The city began soliciting applications this month for two police sergeants and six officers. They'll report to Chief Glenn Bennett, who accepted the top job in June. The Cybertrucks — finished in what appears to be a clean black-and-white police livery — were shown off alongside the hiring push, signaling the department is close to operational.
It's a natural fit. Starbase exists almost entirely within SpaceX's footprint, and Tesla and SpaceX share the same parent in Elon Musk. Using Cybertrucks as police cruisers gives the vehicles a high-visibility real-world deployment that goes well beyond the handful of law enforcement agencies that have piloted them elsewhere in the US. Whether the Cybertruck's stainless steel body, towing capacity, and over-the-air update capability translate into practical advantages for patrol work is something Chief Bennett's team will find out firsthand.
For now, Starbase is one of the more unusual municipal experiments in the country — a city of roughly a thousand residents built around a rocket launch facility, fielding a police force that drives vehicles built by a company whose CEO also runs the launch site next door. The Cybertrucks look the part. The real question is how they perform on the job.
