In March 2026, SpaceX removed in-motion use from Standby Mode entirely, pushing mobile users toward a Roam plan starting at $50/month. Then in April 2026, the company quietly removed Standby Mode's ability to shield users from demand surcharges upon reactivation — meaning customers in high-demand areas could face a surcharge of up to $1,500 when switching back to full Residential service, even if they'd been on Standby the whole time.
Taken together, Standby Mode has gone from a generous free pause, to a $5 low-speed safety net, to a $10 stripped-down holding pattern in under a year. For seasonal users or those who travel for extended periods and want to keep their dish registered without paying full price, the math is getting harder to justify — especially now that reactivating doesn't guarantee you'll avoid a demand surcharge.
