Tesla is preparing to bring back the Model Y Performance in China, and regulatory filings suggest it's arriving with a meaningful hardware upgrade. A certification submission to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on July 10, 2026, reveals a new dual-motor variant built at the Shanghai Gigafactory — centered on a brand-new rear motor that pushes well beyond what the outgoing Performance trim offered.

A New Motor at the Core
The headline change is the rear motor. The new unit, designated TL2, is rated at 291 kW — a 40 kW increase over the 3D3 motor used in the previous Model Y Performance. Paired with a 176 kW front motor, the combined AWD system represents a notable step up in peak output for the nameplate in China.
The previous Model Y Performance had been absent from the Chinese market for over a year following the Model Y facelift (Juniper) in early 2025. This MIIT filing signals Tesla is ready to close that gap — and it's not simply reintroducing the old configuration.
What the MIIT Filing Reveals
MIIT filings in China are the closest thing to an official spec sheet before a product launch. The public disclosure period runs from July 11 to July 17, 2026, after which a market launch typically follows within a few months. Here's what the filing discloses, according to the certification data:
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Rear Motor | TL2 — 291 kW |
| Front Motor | 176 kW |
| Drivetrain | Dual-motor AWD |
| Top Speed | 250 km/h |
| Battery | Ternary lithium-ion (LG Energy Solution China) |
| Wheels | 21-inch, staggered (255/35R21 front / 275/35R21 rear) |
| Dimensions (L×W×H) | 4,796 × 1,920 × 1,611 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2,890 mm |
| Curb Weight | 2,027 kg |
| Manufacturing | Gigafactory Shanghai |
Why This Matters Beyond China
The TL2 motor designation is new to public filings, which raises a natural question: is this a China-specific unit, or a platform-level upgrade that could eventually appear in other markets? Tesla has historically used its Shanghai plant as a testbed for hardware revisions before broader rollout — the Juniper Model Y itself launched in China months ahead of other regions.
The 291 kW rear motor figure also sits meaningfully above what's currently on offer in most Performance variants globally. Whether Tesla plans to align international specs upward, or whether this is a deliberate regional differentiation to compete in an increasingly aggressive Chinese EV market, remains to be seen. Either way, the TL2 is now on the regulatory record.
Pricing hasn't been disclosed — that typically comes at or near the official launch announcement. Given the MIIT disclosure window closes July 17, a formal reveal could come as soon as late July or August 2026, with deliveries likely following in Q3 or Q4.
