Using certified installer locations as test drive hubs is a deliberate strategy: Tesla gets physical presence in markets where building a standalone store isn't cost-effective, while partners like Think Solar benefit from the foot traffic and brand association.
The four locations now offering self-serve test drives are:

How the Self-Serve Model Works
Tesla's self-serve test drive format removes the salesperson from the equation entirely. According to Tesla's support documentation, participants need to download the Tesla app, sign in, upload photos of both sides of a valid driver's licence, and sign a Self-Serve Test Drive Agreement before getting behind the wheel. The drive itself typically runs 30 minutes.
The format has been running in parts of Australia and New Zealand's North Island for some time. Expanding it south means Tesla can now reach buyers in cities and towns where a traditional test drive appointment — requiring a trip to Auckland or Wellington — would be a genuine barrier to purchase.
Queenstown Event This Week
The timing of the announcement isn't accidental. An "Experience Tesla at Think Solar Queenstown" event is scheduled for July 29–31, 2026, running 10 AM–4 PM each day, with Model Y test drives available on-site. It's a soft launch with a live event attached — a format Tesla has used elsewhere to generate early bookings and social proof before a location settles into its regular self-serve rhythm.
