A persistent gap in investor confidence is showing up in the stock charts. Fund manager Gary Black flagged this week that markets are currently pricing Uber as the stronger play on the global shift to unsupervised autonomous driving — and the year-to-date numbers back that up: Tesla is down 19%, Uber is down 11%, and both trail the Nasdaq 100, which is up 15%.

The comparison is notable because Tesla and Uber are pursuing autonomous driving from opposite ends of the stack. Tesla is building its own robotaxi network with proprietary hardware and FSD software, betting that vertical integration wins long-term. Uber, by contrast, is positioning itself as the platform layer — an asset-light aggregator that partners with multiple autonomous vehicle operators rather than owning the technology itself. Investors appear to be rewarding the lower-capital, lower-execution-risk model, at least for now.
For Tesla shareholders, the relative underperformance reflects ongoing skepticism about the timeline and scalability of Tesla's fully unsupervised FSD deployment, even as the Cybercab program moves forward. Whether the market's current read proves correct depends heavily on how quickly Tesla can demonstrate commercial robotaxi operations at scale — a question that remains open heading into the back half of 2026.
