Terafab at Giga Texas: 6 Details That Matter

Elon Musk dropped a concrete timeline at SpaceX's financial results meeting on October 20: the joint SpaceX and Tesla Advanced Technology Chip Fab R&D facility at Giga Texas is targeting its first experimental test chip in May or June 2027. Aerial footage from Joe Tegtmeyer shows construction moving fast — foundation work and steel erection are both underway. Here's what the project actually involves and what that 2027 date really means.

1. This Is Part of a Three-Company Project Called Terafab

The facility at Giga Texas isn't just a Tesla or SpaceX side project — it's part of a broader initiative called Terafab, a collaborative semiconductor venture involving Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. The research fab sits on the North Campus of Giga Texas in Austin, Travis County. A separate, larger-volume production facility under the same Terafab name is planned for Grimes County, Texas, at the site of a former coal plant, with a Phase 1 investment of $16.8 billion.

2. Ground Was Broken Just Six Months Ago

Tesla broke ground on the research fab on April 22, 2026. The pace since then has been aggressive. As of October 2026, the foundation is actively being poured — and it's not a standard concrete slab. According to reporting from multiple sources, the foundation is engineered as a giant shock absorber to eliminate vibration, a requirement for precision semiconductor lithography equipment. Steel erection is also underway. The building shell itself isn't expected to be complete until late 2027.

3. The First Chip Target Is Q2 2027 — But Musk Is Hedging

Musk stated at the SpaceX financial results meeting that the facility is targeting its first test chip in May or June 2027. Critically, he framed this as an internal, aspirational target — his words were that they are 'just figuring out chip fabrication' and acknowledged they may miss the dates. The chip itself is tentatively described as an SRAM-type part, essentially a test vehicle for proving out the fabrication line rather than a production-ready chip for deployment.

4. ASML and Key Equipment Suppliers Have Already Expedited Shipments

On October 20, 2026 — the same day as the SpaceX financial results meeting — Musk announced that ASML and other critical semiconductor equipment suppliers have expedited shipments to Terafab. According to background reporting, the facility is expected to receive its first EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography tool from ASML in mid-2027. EUV tools are the most advanced and expensive equipment in chip manufacturing, and securing early delivery slots signals serious intent from the supply chain side.

5. The Chips Are Destined for Optimus, Cybercab, and Space-Based Data Centers

The end-use case for chips produced here spans both Tesla and SpaceX applications. On the Tesla side, the target products are Optimus robots and Cybercabs — both of which require custom silicon at scale. On the SpaceX side, the facility is intended to produce high-power chips for space-based data centers. The underlying driver, according to background research, is a projected demand for computing power exceeding 1 terawatt between Tesla and SpaceX — a figure described as significantly larger than current global supply.

6. The Research Fab Is a Proving Ground, Not the Main Factory

It's worth being precise about what this facility is and isn't. The Giga Texas site is explicitly an R&D and research fabrication facility — its purpose is to develop and validate the manufacturing process. Volume production, if and when it comes, is the job of the Grimes County Terafab. That distinction matters for interpreting the 2027 timeline: a first test chip next year doesn't mean Optimus robots will be running on in-house silicon by 2028. It means the process development phase will have begun in earnest.

The construction footage from Tegtmeyer makes one thing clear: this isn't vaporware. Foundation engineering at this precision level represents a real capital commitment, and expedited ASML equipment orders aren't placed speculatively. Whether the May–June 2027 chip date holds or slips, the semiconductor ambitions of Tesla and SpaceX are now physically taking shape in Austin.
