Tesla's Cybercab Robotaxi is picking up a small but genuinely useful refinement: the vehicle will now automatically open its trunk when you exit at your destination — but only if you had opened it before boarding at pickup. How the Feature Works
The logic is straightforward: if a rider accesses the Cybercab's trunk at pickup — to stow luggage, a bag, or anything else — the vehicle registers that action. Upon arrival at the destination, the trunk opens automatically as the passenger exits, eliminating the need to fumble with the app or touchscreen while managing belongings.
This builds on the Cybercab's existing trunk access system. According to Tesla's own documentation, the trunk can be opened and closed via the in-vehicle touchscreen, the Robotaxi mobile app, or a physical switch under the exterior handle. The vehicle also detects the rider's phone to trigger automatic trunk access at both pickup and drop-off. The new behavior adds a memory layer on top of that: prior trunk use during the trip now signals intent at the destination end.
The Cybercab's trunk offers 20.2 cubic feet (572 liters) of storage and can handle up to 220 lbs (100 kg). There is no frunk. For riders traveling with anything beyond a small bag, that rear storage is the only option — which makes frictionless access at both ends of a trip a practical priority, not just a convenience feature.

Tesla launched the Cybercab for public use in Austin, Texas, on September 4, 2026. Less than a month in, updates like this one are already shipping. That cadence matters. Robotaxi services live or die on rider experience, and the gap between a technically functional autonomous vehicle and one that feels intuitive is filled by exactly these kinds of incremental improvements.
Trunk management is a friction point that traditional rideshare services handle with human drivers — a driver can pop the trunk, remind you to grab your bag, or wait while you unload. A fully driverless vehicle has none of those social cues. Automating the trunk based on trip context is Tesla's answer to that gap: the car infers what you need from what you already did.
It also signals that Tesla is actively monitoring real-world Robotaxi usage and iterating quickly. Whether this update arrived via an OTA push or a server-side behavior change hasn't been confirmed, but the speed of deployment — within weeks of public launch — suggests a software team that is watching ride data closely.
For a service still in its early weeks, that responsiveness is arguably more important than any single feature. The question now is whether Tesla can maintain this pace of refinement as the Robotaxi fleet and rider base scale beyond Austin.
