Transport Canada has issued recall 2023546 covering certain 2021, 2022, and 2023 Tesla Model X vehicles over a brake fluid warning system failure. The short version: the low brake fluid warning lamp may not illuminate when fluid drops to a dangerous level — meaning a driver could experience reduced braking performance without any dashboard alert. Tesla has already issued an OTA software fix, but owners need to confirm their vehicle has received it.

What the Problem Is

Under normal conditions, your Model X should display a warning if brake fluid falls below the safe threshold. In the affected vehicles, that warning lamp can fail to activate — leaving the driver with no indication that braking performance may be compromised. According to Transport Canada (identification number RA-74443), this creates an increased risk of a crash.

The recall was originally published on October 11, 2023, and last updated by Transport Canada on October 17, 2023. It applies specifically to Model X units from model years 2021, 2022, and 2023.

The Fix — and How to Confirm It

Tesla resolved this issue through an over-the-air software update. If your Model X is already running software version 2023.32.7 or later, the fix is already applied and no further action is required on your part.

Here's how to check your current software version in under a minute:

  1. Tap the Tesla 'T' logo at the top center of your touchscreen.
  2. Select Software from the menu.
  3. Look at the version number displayed on screen.
  4. If it reads 2023.32.7 or higher, you are covered. No action needed.
  5. If your version is older than 2023.32.7, connect to Wi-Fi and allow any pending update to install. You can also tap Schedule to set an overnight update window.

Tesla will notify affected owners by email, but given the safety nature of this issue, it's worth checking your software version now rather than waiting for that notification to arrive.

If Your Software Is Already Up to Date

No dealership visit is required. This is a purely software-driven fix — one of the cleaner examples of Tesla using OTA capability to resolve a safety issue without owners needing to book a service appointment. If your version number is 2023.32.7 or higher, Transport Canada considers the corrective action complete for your vehicle.

If you have questions about whether your specific VIN is included in the recall scope, you can cross-reference directly on the Transport Canada recall page or contact Tesla support with your VIN on hand.
