Inside the X Takeover: Giga Texas Tours, Cybercab Rides, and The Boring Company's Bastrop Hub

Over three days in early October 2026, the Austin area became an unlikely showcase for the breadth of Elon Musk's industrial empire. The @theXtakeover event — organized by Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley (TOSV, Inc.) with Tesla providing the Giga Texas venue — pulled together factory floor access, Cybercab street rides, and a detour to The Boring Company's growing public campus in Bastrop. For attendees, it was less a fan convention and more a ground-level look at where several of these companies actually stand right now.

What the Event Actually Was

It's worth being precise: the X Takeover was not an official Tesla event. TOSV, Inc. organized it independently, with Tesla providing the Giga Texas facility as a venue. Ticket prices started around $49–$81 depending on tier, with children under 18 admitted free. VIP Premium and VIP Performance ticket holders got the most coveted access — factory floor tours of Giga Texas on October 8 and 9 — and those VIP tiers sold out by mid-September, weeks before the event.

That sell-out pace matters as context. The demand for direct access to Tesla's manufacturing operations and The Boring Company's infrastructure isn't niche enthusiast interest anymore. It's broad enough that a community-organized event can move premium tickets in under a month.

Giga Texas on the Factory Floor

Factory tours ran Thursday and Friday before the main weekend programming. For most attendees, this was the centerpiece — a rare walk through the facility where Model Y and Cybertruck production runs alongside the early stages of Optimus robot manufacturing. According to event details, the tours were structured, not open-floor wandering, and access was strictly gated to VIP ticket holders.

Giga Texas has become one of the most watched manufacturing sites in the EV industry, and for good reason. It's the production home of the Cybertruck, the high-volume Model Y, and increasingly the physical home of Tesla's robotics ambitions. Getting attendees onto that floor — even on a guided basis — signals a degree of operational confidence from Tesla's side.

Cybercab in the Wild, at Scale

If the factory tours were the headline, the Cybercab rides were the lived experience. According to Joe Tegtmeyer's recap, Cybercab rides ran throughout the City of Austin across all three days — not just on a closed track or demo loop, but across the city itself. Texas DMV records cited in background reporting show 319 registered Cybercabs in the state, up from 169 previously, suggesting Tesla has been quietly expanding its operational fleet ahead of any formal commercial launch.

Footage from the event also confirmed Cybercab operating in wet conditions — a detail that matters more than it might seem. Autonomous vehicle programs have historically struggled with rain and low-visibility environments. Seeing the Cybercab in active use during inclement weather, even informally, adds a data point to the real-world readiness picture.

The Boring Company's Bastrop Campus

The Bastrop stop added a dimension to the event that went beyond Tesla hardware. Hyperloop Plaza — located at 865 FM 1209 in Bastrop, adjacent to The Boring Company's headquarters and tunnel operations — is a genuinely unusual place. It's a public-facing commercial district built around a tunnel testing site, featuring the Boring Bodega (a market and café open daily 7 AM to 9 PM), Prufrock Pub, His & Hers Salon, Cafe Monet, and pickleball courts.

The short Hyperloop test tunnel in Bastrop was completed in 2022 and has been used since for vacuum pump system testing. The plaza itself represents The Boring Company's attempt to build community infrastructure around its operations — a deliberate contrast to the typical industrial-park anonymity of a tunnel-boring company. Bringing X Takeover attendees through it served a dual purpose: it gave fans something tangible to experience, and it gave The Boring Company a live audience for what is still, by most measures, an early-stage public presence.

The Broader Picture

Maye Musk delivered a keynote, Nicki Minaj appeared as a special guest, and Elon Musk joined via live virtual interview. Tesla's Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen participated virtually as well. The programming mix — factory access, infrastructure tours, Cybercab rides, celebrity appearances, and a virtual sit-down with Musk — reads less like a fan event and more like a coordinated soft launch of a public narrative: these companies are operational, they're building real things, and they want people to see it firsthand.

Whether the X Takeover format becomes an annual fixture or a one-off experiment remains to be seen. But as a snapshot of where Tesla, The Boring Company, and the Cybercab program stand in October 2026, it offered more ground-truth signal than most press events manage to deliver.
