Starlink Mini 2 Has a Built-In Battery — No Plug Required

SpaceX's next compact satellite dish is getting a meaningful upgrade: the Starlink Mini 2 includes a built-in battery, meaning users can deploy it by simply pointing it at the sky — no power cable required at setup. The device is confirmed to be entering production, and early hardware teardowns are already revealing the technical details behind the change.

What the Hardware Reveals

The Mini 2 carries the hardware revision designation mini2_prod1, confirming it is a distinct production unit rather than a minor board refresh. Inside, it runs a 4S lithium battery pack managed by a BQ40Z-series Battery Management System — the same class of BMS used in precision battery applications where accurate state-of-charge monitoring matters. The specific capacity of the battery has not yet been disclosed.

Charging is handled through a USB-C Power Delivery port supporting an input range of 11–24 V, with a minimum requirement of 100W (20V/5A). That's a meaningful spec: it means a capable USB-C PD charger or a compatible power bank can top up the dish, keeping the setup genuinely cable-free for extended periods once charged.

Slightly Smaller, Marginally Different RF Output

The panel PCB measures 225 × 273 mm — a modest reduction from the original Mini's 236 × 276 mm footprint. The average EIRP (Effective Isotropic Radiated Power) comes in at 27.4 dBW, fractionally below the Mini 1's 27.57 dBW. In practical terms, that difference is unlikely to be noticeable under normal conditions, but it does suggest SpaceX made deliberate tradeoffs to accommodate the battery without significantly increasing size or weight.

Why This Matters Beyond Convenience

The original Starlink Mini was already a compelling portable option — compact enough to fit in a backpack, priced accessibly relative to the standard dish. But the power cable requirement was a real friction point in genuinely off-grid scenarios: boats, remote campsites, disaster response deployments, or vehicle rooftop mounts where running a cable is awkward. A self-contained unit that charges over USB-C changes the calculus considerably.

The USB-C PD standard also matters strategically. It means the Mini 2 can share a charging ecosystem with laptops, phones, and portable power stations — the kind of gear people already carry when they're off-grid. That's a deliberate design choice that reduces the peripheral burden of deploying the dish in the field.

SpaceX hasn't announced pricing or a public launch date for the Mini 2 yet. Given that production is confirmed to be underway under the mini2_prod1 designation, a formal reveal is likely not far off. The battery capacity figure — conspicuously absent from current teardown data — will be the number that determines how useful the untethered mode actually is in practice.
