Tesla's Cybercab is actively being tested in the real world — and it's doing so in winter conditions in the Southern Hemisphere. Sawyer Merritt reported this week that at least one Cybercab is undergoing cold-weather trials in New Zealand, with a Cybertruck also on hand. The sighting confirms Tesla is pushing development of its autonomous ride-hailing vehicle beyond controlled environments.
According to background reporting, at least two gold-painted Cybercab prototypes were first spotted in mid-June 2026 on a transporter heading to the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds near Cardrona — a facility well-suited for low-temperature and variable-traction testing that New Zealand's winter climate provides. The presence of a Cybertruck alongside the Cybercab suggests Tesla may be running parallel validation work, or simply using the truck as a support and chase vehicle during the trials.
Winter testing at a remote proving ground is a standard step in any vehicle's development cycle, and for the Cybercab — which is designed to operate fully autonomously — validating sensor performance, traction control, and thermal management in cold, wet conditions is essential before any broader commercial rollout. The fact that Tesla is conducting these trials in the Southern Hemisphere during the Northern Hemisphere's summer points to a deliberate effort to compress the testing calendar rather than wait for winter to arrive stateside.
How quickly these results feed back into Cybercab's production and deployment timeline remains to be seen, but active international testing at this stage is a meaningful signal that the program is moving forward.
