For the sixth consecutive year, Tesla has locked down the top two spots on Cars.com's annual American-Made Index. The Model 3 claimed #1 and the Model Y #2 in the 2026 ranking — beating every gas-powered vehicle on the list and cementing Tesla's status as the most domestically produced automaker in the country.
Cars.com released its 21st annual American-Made Index on June 23, 2026. The methodology goes well beyond assembly location — it factors in U.S. and Canadian parts sourcing, U.S. factory employment, and engine and transmission origin. Tesla's manufacturing footprint in Fremont, California and Austin, Texas gives both models a strong foundation across every scoring category.
The Model 3 and Model Y were also the only pure battery-electric vehicles to crack the top 10 this year. That's a notable contrast with the broader EV picture: the total number of EVs on the full index dropped sharply from 11 last year to just five in 2026, largely attributed to the expiration of the federal EV tax credit at the end of September. Tesla's domestic manufacturing depth — rather than tax incentive eligibility — is what keeps it at the top of this particular list.
Six straight years at #1 is a streak no other automaker, electric or otherwise, has matched on this index. Whether that consistency translates into a purchasing argument for buyers weighing domestic content is a separate question — but as a manufacturing story, it's hard to argue with the data.
