Germany's automotive press just handed Tesla a significant endorsement. AutoBild — part of Germany's biggest news outlet — ranked the Model 3 as the best midsize sedan in a comparative test that included both electric and gasoline-powered vehicles. For a German publication steeped in ICE tradition to place an American EV above domestic rivals is no small thing.

According to AutoBild's May 2026 test, the specific variant evaluated was the Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive, priced at 44,990 EUR. It earned a grade of 1.6 — rated "gut" (good) on the German school grading scale. The test pitted it directly against premium German alternatives including the BMW i4 eDrive40 and Mercedes CLA 250+, both of which cost over 20,000 EUR more. The Model 3 posted a 0–100 km/h sprint of 5.4 seconds and a braking distance of 35.6 meters from 100 km/h.
The value proposition appears to be a central factor in the ranking. At roughly half the price of some German competitors, the Model 3 delivered performance and dynamics that AutoBild found competitive enough to place it at the top of the segment — a segment that European buyers have historically associated with brands like BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 edged it in acceleration at 5.2 seconds, and the Mercedes CLA 250+ had the shortest braking distance at 33.8 meters, but neither claimed the overall top spot.
For Tesla, a top ranking from a German automotive institution carries weight beyond the numbers. AutoBild's readership skews toward traditional car buyers — exactly the audience Tesla needs to convert in Europe's most competitive auto market. Whether this translates into a sales bump in Germany remains to be seen, but it's the kind of third-party validation that no marketing budget can manufacture.
