Tesla Model Y Named Best Medium SUV in Australia & NZ for 2026

The Tesla Model Y has taken out the Best Medium SUV award for 2026 from Chasing Cars, one of Australia and New Zealand's most widely read automotive review outlets. The result, published on June 28, cements the Model Y's position as the benchmark in its segment — even as competition in the electric SUV space continues to intensify.

According to Chasing Cars, the MY26 Model Y qualified as a new entrant for 2026 eligibility because of what the publication described as "significant changes under the skin that fundamentally affect the way it drives" — not just a cosmetic refresh. Among the standout findings: the Model Y posted astoundingly low electricity consumption, a direct result of Tesla's motor and battery engineering. Reviewers also highlighted the spacious, light-filled cabin, ventilated seats standard across all variants, and steering that has been refined to feel considerably less hyperactive than before.

The assessment also included the new Model Y L — a physically larger variant — which introduces adaptive dampers to the nameplate outside of the Performance trim. Chasing Cars noted the dampers are tuned toward comfort while still delivering strong body control, a balance that's historically been difficult to strike in this class. Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature, which rolled out in Australia concurrently with the updated Model Y, was flagged as an additional differentiator for its ability to navigate real-world roads with minimal driver input.

It's worth noting that the overall 2026 Chasing Cars Car of the Year title went to the Honda Prelude — so the Model Y didn't sweep the night. But winning the medium SUV category outright, in a market as competitive and discerning as Australia, is a meaningful signal that the updated Model Y is landing well with buyers and experts alike. For owners who recently took delivery of a 2026 Model Y, the verdict from one of the region's toughest reviewers is a reassuring one.
