The selloff followed Tuesday's earnings call, and at least one prominent market analyst argues Tesla's management made the hole deeper by staying silent on the metrics that matter most right now.
Gary Black, a well-known Tesla investor and analyst, called out management directly for not disclosing basic unsupervised autonomy data during the call. His specific ask: how many unsupervised autonomous vehicles are currently operating without safety operators present. That single figure, he suggested, would go a long way toward helping investors gauge whether Tesla's robotaxi ambitions are translating into real-world scale — or still living on a slide deck.
The timing is hard to ignore. Tesla's autonomous driving story is supposed to be the central bull case for the stock at this valuation. When an earnings call passes without concrete progress metrics on that front, the market fills the silence with skepticism. A 7% single-day drop is the price of that ambiguity.
Whether management chose to withhold the data, doesn't yet have numbers worth sharing, or simply misjudged what investors needed to hear, the result is the same: a credibility gap that the next quarterly call will need to close.
