Tesla V2L for Model 3 & Model Y: 6 Details That Matter

Tesla has officially launched Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) capability — branded as Power Share — for its 2027 Model 3 and Model Y. The rollout starts in China, Australia, and New Zealand, with additional markets expected to follow. Here's everything owners need to know about what it does, what it costs, and who actually qualifies.

1. It's a 2027 Model Year Feature — Not a Software Push

V2L on Model 3 and Model Y is tied to the 2027 model year hardware, not an over-the-air update that existing owners will receive automatically. According to multiple verified sources, 2027 model year vehicles became available to order on October 1, 2026, with deliveries expected to begin later in October. If you're on a current-generation vehicle, keep reading — there may still be a path.

2. Existing US Model Y Owners May Be Able to Retrofit

This isn't exclusively a new-car story. Tesla published an official service procedure on August 16, 2026, allowing owners of US-built Model Y vehicles to upgrade from a PCS1 to a PCS2 Lite power conversion system at a Tesla Service Center. That hardware swap unlocks V2L on compatible existing vehicles. Pricing for the retrofit has not yet been confirmed by Tesla, so contact your Service Center for a quote before assuming it fits your budget.

3. You'll Need a Separate Adapter — and It Costs $80

V2L doesn't work out of the box with a standard outlet. You'll need Tesla's dedicated Outlet Adapter, priced at $80 USD, used in conjunction with the Gen 3 Mobile Connector. Factor that into your total cost of ownership if you're planning to use this feature regularly — it's a modest add-on, but it's a required one.

4. The Power Output Is 2.4 kW Continuous

The system delivers 2.4 kilowatts of continuous power at 120V and 20 amps. That's enough to run a camping fridge, a portable projector, power tools on a job site, or keep devices charged during an outage. It won't run a full household, but for off-grid utility it's a meaningful capability — roughly equivalent to a mid-range portable generator.

5. This Is Campsite V2L, Not Home Backup

A critical distinction worth spelling out: the V2L feature on Model 3 and Model Y covers external device and appliance power — think tailgating, camping, or emergency device charging. It does not extend to whole-home backup (bidirectional home charging). That PowerShare capability remains exclusive to the Cybertruck for now. Don't order a 2027 Model Y expecting to run your house off it.

6. The Cybertruck Got There First — Model 3 and Y Are Catching Up

V2L isn't new to Tesla's lineup. The Cybertruck launched with PowerShare (including home backup), and the refreshed 2026 Model Y Performance gained V2L when it arrived in US showrooms in late 2025. The China-exclusive Model Y L also picked up V2L in October 2025. The 2027 Model 3 and standard Model Y are now joining that group — and with more markets confirmed to follow the initial China, Australia, and New Zealand launch, a broader global rollout appears to be underway.

The V2L expansion to Tesla's two highest-volume models is a meaningful upgrade for anyone who camps, works outdoors, or simply wants a backup power source on wheels. The open question is timing for the remaining markets — and whether the retrofit pricing will make the PCS2 upgrade worthwhile for existing US Model Y owners sitting on compatible hardware.
