US Trade Rep to Tour Tesla Fremont Factory This Thursday

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is scheduled to tour Tesla's Fremont, California factory this Thursday, June 11, as part of a broader two-day swing through advanced manufacturing facilities in the state. The visit is framed around the Trump administration's push to highlight onshoring — bringing jobs and production lines back to American soil.

Tesla is a natural showcase for that argument. According to industry rankings, Tesla vehicles sold in the US are the most American-made cars on the market — ahead of both Ford and GM. The Fremont plant produces the Model 3 and Model Y, and Tesla has been quietly expanding its footprint in the area, recently leasing an additional 375,000+ square feet of research and industrial space near the factory. The company is also planning to convert part of the Fremont floor — currently used for Model S and Model X production — to manufacture Optimus humanoid robots.

Greer's Thursday itinerary extends beyond Tesla. According to the USTR's schedule, he will also stop at NextFlex's facility in San Jose and attend the Barclays Board and CEO Semiconductor Summit in Menlo Park, with a roundtable at Stanford's Hoover Institution also on the agenda. The California leg is a deliberate signal: the administration wants to demonstrate that its trade policy is producing tangible results in high-profile, high-tech American factories.

The visit carries some backstory worth noting. In March 2025, Tesla formally wrote to Greer's office during a review of unfair trade practices, urging the administration to weigh the downstream impact of tariffs on American exporters and flagging supply chain constraints — particularly around lithium-ion battery components. Thursday's tour suggests the relationship between Tesla and the USTR has moved from lobbying letters to a public partnership moment.
