Daniel's Notes: How to Shop for Model S Accessories

The Model S is the trickiest car in Tesla's lineup to shop accessories for, and it's not because the car is complicated — it's because the production span is. Tesla has been building the Model S since 2012, and the 2021 Plaid refresh restyled almost the entire interior while keeping the silhouette nearly identical. Two Model S cars parked side-by-side can look like the same car and need completely different parts. Rule one: always know your year band. Anything we ship as 2021-2026 is Plaid-era only. Anything labelled 2012-2020 is pre-refresh only. A small handful of cargo-area items (trunk liners, frunk liners) carry across the full span and we label those 2012-2026.

Rule two: the glass roof is its own shape. The Model S has a full-panoramic glass roof that runs from windshield to rear window in one continuous sweep — geometrically different from Highland's smaller roof panel and from Juniper's two-segment glass. A Highland or Juniper sunshade in a Model S leaves 3-4 inches of unprotected glass at both ends, and the tension frame won't seat correctly. Our Model S roof shade is tooled to the Plaid-era panoramic shape, with the right curvature to follow the glass without sagging.

The Model S is a premium vehicle and owners expect premium fit. Aftermarket parts that "almost fit" feel cheap in this car the way they wouldn't in a Model 3. Buy parts engineered for the Model S, not generic Tesla parts.

Rule three: cabin geometry is wider, longer, and more premium than 3 or Y. The Model S has a 116.5-inch wheelbase and a 77.3-inch overall width — that's 4.4 inches longer wheelbase and 3.9 inches wider track than the Model 3. Floor mats from a Model 3 leave a finger-wide gap on every edge in a Model S. The center console armrest is wider, the door cards have larger storage volumes, and the rear footwell is meaningfully deeper. None of this is interchangeable with the smaller cars. The flip side: the S shares a real platform with the X, so center console parts, cup-holder inserts, wireless charger mats, the cabin air filter, and dashboard accessories cross-fit S↔X. We explicitly label those SKUs as Model S/X or Model S & X; if a Model S product page doesn't mention X, treat it as Model S only.

Rule four: yoke vs round wheel matters for steering-wheel accessories only. Tesla introduced the yoke as standard on 2021 Plaid, then made the round wheel a no-cost option from late 2022 forward — so two same-year cars on the same lot can have different wheels. This affects covers, full grip wraps, and rim-clamp phone mounts. It does NOT affect column-mounted accessories, paddle covers, or button decals. Always verify your wheel before ordering anything that wraps the rim.

Rule five: lower production volume than 3/Y means the aftermarket is thinner — and our first-party fit data matters more. Tesla builds far more Model 3s and Ys per year than Model S, so the third-party accessory market for S is smaller and dominated by generic "fits all Tesla" listings that don't really fit. When you do find a Model S-specific accessory, the vendor's fit data is what determines whether it lives in your trunk for two years or gets returned in two weeks. We physically fit-test on a reference Plaid before any Model S SKU ships — that's the same standard we use for Highland and Juniper, but it's more load-bearing here because there's less prior art to lean on.

One last note on charging: the Model S is NACS-native across both generations — no Supercharger adapter needed, ever. For non-Tesla DC fast charging (Electrify America, EVgo) you'll need Tesla's NACS-to-CCS1 adapter (~$250). For older Level 2 home wallboxes you'll want a NACS-to-J1772 adapter; we don't sell those, but Lectron makes a good one for ~$100. My buying-priority order for new Plaid-era Model S owners: floor mats first (the wider cabin makes universal mats look obviously wrong), roof and windshield sunshades next (the glass roof bakes the cabin), then mud flaps and cabin filter, and save the spoiler and cosmetic carbon for month two when you actually know what aesthetic you want. Read our honest fitment-advice guide if you want our full philosophy on what we don't sell and why.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions Model S owners ask us most often. Each answer is reviewed by our engineering team before publication.

Do pre-Plaid (2012-2020) Model S accessories fit the Plaid (2021+)?

Partly — and the partition isn't intuitive. The 2021 Plaid refresh kept the same external sheet-metal silhouette but restyled almost everything inside. What carries over: trunk and frunk liners (cargo wells are nearly identical), most exterior items like mud flaps and car covers, and front-row floor-mat shapes (close enough that aftermarket pre-Plaid mats will sit, though they may not snap into the post-2021 OEM clips). What does NOT carry over: dashboard trim and screen-area accessories (the 2021+ refresh added the horizontal landscape screen), center console (entirely redesigned with new cup holders and wireless pad), steering wheel covers and grips (yoke vs round wheel), door cards (new speaker grille layout). When in doubt, check the year banding on the product page — anything we ship as 2021-2026 is Plaid-era only, anything labelled 2012-2020 is pre-refresh only, and a small set of trunk/frunk products are labelled 2012-2026.

Does the Plaid yoke change accessory selection?

Yes — for steering-wheel-specific accessories only. The yoke (introduced on 2021 Plaid, made optional alongside a round wheel from late 2022 onward) has a fundamentally different rim profile from a circular wheel: the top and bottom are flat, the grip diameter is thicker on the spokes, and there's no continuous circumference for a wrap-around cover. This affects: steering-wheel covers, full-circumference grip wraps, and any wheel-mounted phone mount that clamps to the rim. This does NOT affect: wheel-mounted button decals, paddle-shifter covers, or anything that attaches to the column. If you bought your Model S in late 2022 or later, check your VIN — Tesla offered the round wheel as a no-cost option, so two same-year cars on the lot can have different wheels. BASENOR's Plaid steering-wheel SKUs always specify yoke vs round in the title or first image.

Are Model X accessories cross-compatible with Model S?

Partially — the S and X share a platform, so interior parts have higher cross-fit than any other Tesla pair. Cross-fits: center console covers, console organizers, cup-holder inserts, wireless charger mats, dashboard sunshades for the screen, cabin air filters (shared HEPA housing), and most armrest accessories. We label these SKUs explicitly as Model S/X or Model S & X. Does NOT cross-fit: floor mats (the X has a third-row footwell and different rear floor geometry — even with the 5-seat config), mud flaps (different wheelbase and fender flares), trunk and frunk liners (X has a falcon-wing-influenced cargo opening and a smaller frunk), roof and windshield sunshades (the X has a windshield that wraps further over the cabin), and any door-card or pillar trim. Always verify on the PDP — if a Model S accessory page doesn't mention X, assume it's Model S only.

Does the Model S need a NACS adapter for non-Tesla chargers?

Depends on your year. The 2012-2020 pre-refresh Model S shipped with Tesla's proprietary connector (now called NACS) and needs an adapter to use any non-Tesla station — most commonly a CHAdeMO adapter for early DC fast chargers (Tesla sold one for $450 and discontinued it in 2022), or a J1772 adapter for any Level 2 home/public AC station (Tesla still ships one in the trunk). The 2021+ Plaid-era Model S also has a NACS port — Tesla has not switched the S to CCS or any other standard — so the same adapter rules apply. For non-Tesla DC fast charging (Electrify America, EVgo) on either generation, you need the Tesla-sold NACS-to-CCS1 adapter (~$250 retail). For Tesla Supercharging on either generation, no adapter — plug directly. We don't sell charging adapters; Lectron and TeslaTap make trustworthy third-party J1772 options for ~$100 if you've lost yours.

How does Model S floor-mat fit differ from Model 3?

Significantly — and a Model 3 mat in a Model S leaves a finger-wide gap on every edge. The Model S cabin is 4.4 inches longer in wheelbase, 3.9 inches wider in track, and has a noticeably deeper rear footwell well than the Model 3. The driver's mat is longer toward the firewall, the rear mat covers a wider lateral span, and the rear well is deep enough that a flat Model 3-style mat slides forward under braking. Our 2021-2026 Model S floor mat set is a 7-piece tooled to the Plaid-era cabin — three front mats (driver, passenger, transmission tunnel skin), two rear-row mats, one trunk well, one frunk. The mat clips align with the Plaid-era OEM anchor points, which moved when Tesla restyled the floor in 2021. If you have a pre-2021 Model S, search our catalog for 2012-2020 Model S mats, not the Plaid-era set.

Built for the Model S. Tested on a Model S.

Every product in the BASENOR Model S catalog has been tooled, fit-validated, and signed off by Daniel's engineering team on a real 2022+ Plaid-era Model S — not a render, not a CAD overlay, not a hopeful "should fit." If a part doesn't seal, snap, or sit flush on our reference car, it doesn't ship to yours.
