Chile has been a proving ground for Starlink's reach since the service launched there in 2021, initially focused on connecting remote communities and schools in places like Caleta Sierra and Sotomó. The country was also the first in Latin America to enable Starlink's Direct to Device technology in November 2025, giving conventional smartphones basic satellite connectivity for emergency communications across nearly all Chilean territory. For aviation, Starlink's service is specifically engineered for rotorcraft — handling the vibration, heat, and structural demands of helicopter operations — and is fully authorized for in-motion use in Chile.

For a helicopter business operating in Patagonia or the Andes, connectivity isn't a convenience — it's operational infrastructure. Real-time weather data, crew coordination, emergency response coordination, and live video feeds all depend on a link that ground-based networks simply cannot provide at those latitudes and elevations. According to Starlink's aviation specifications, the service delivers download speeds between 135 and 310 Mbps with latency typically under 99 ms, performance figures that hold up even at rotorcraft speeds and altitudes.

It's a use case that illustrates exactly why SpaceX built the network the way it did — over 9,000 satellites with laser interlinks, designed to cover the gaps that fiber and cell towers will never reach. Chile's remote south is one of those gaps, and for the crews flying missions there, Starlink is now as essential as the aircraft itself.
