Terafab Chip Fab Takes Shape as Concrete Pours Begin

Concrete is actively being poured for the main foundation slab at the joint SpaceX and Tesla chip fabrication facility in Austin, Texas — a tangible sign that what began as an ambitious announcement six months ago is now rising out of the ground. Aerial footage captured by construction tracker Joe Tegtmeyer shows crews laying the slab that ties together the reinforced footings and supporting structures of what the two companies are calling Terafab.

What Terafab Actually Is

Announced officially on March 21, 2026, Terafab is a joint venture between Tesla and SpaceX designed to bring logic fabrication, memory, packaging, and testing under a single roof — a level of vertical integration that no chip manufacturer currently offers at scale. The stated goal is to produce over one terawatt of AI compute capacity per year, feeding Tesla's Optimus robot program, its Cybercab fleet, and SpaceX's space-based data center infrastructure.

Intel has signed on as an outside foundry customer and will leverage Terafab's planned use of Intel's forthcoming 14A manufacturing process — an arrangement that gives the facility a commercial anchor beyond the Tesla and SpaceX internal workload.

Two Sites, Two Timelines

The construction Tegtmeyer is documenting is the prototype research fab, located on the North Campus of Giga Texas in Austin. This is the proving ground — where processes get validated before the main event begins. According to project disclosures, the primary Terafab facility will be built roughly an hour northwest of Houston in Grimes County, Texas, with construction scheduled to start December 1, 2026, and a target completion by end of 2028.

The scale of the Grimes County site is difficult to overstate. The finished facility is projected to span over 100 million square feet — more than ten times the footprint of Giga Texas itself, and, if completed as planned, the largest chip manufacturing facility on the planet.

Terafab: Key Numbers

Initial investment (Phase 1) $16.8 billion
Total investment (all phases) Up to $119 billion
Planned footprint (Grimes County) 100M+ sq ft
Target AI compute output 1+ terawatt / year
Expected workforce 3,000+ (mostly local)
Grimes County construction start December 1, 2026
Grimes County target completion End of 2028

Why the Prototype Fab Matters Right Now

Pouring the main slab is not a ceremonial milestone — it is a structural prerequisite. The slab ties together the reinforced footings that have been taking shape over the past several weeks. Tegtmeyer noted in mid-September that a new tall crane had been assembled on site and that construction activity was accelerating rapidly. The concrete pour documented on September 22 is part of what he describes as a multi-part process, meaning additional pours and structural work are still ahead before the building envelope can begin to rise.

For Tesla and SpaceX, getting the prototype fab operational is the critical path item. Process development, yield optimization, and equipment qualification all need to happen here before the Grimes County megasite can be built around a proven manufacturing recipe. The faster Austin moves, the more confidence both companies will have heading into the December groundbreaking in Grimes County.

The Bigger Picture for Tesla Owners

For Tesla owners, Terafab is most directly relevant to two products: Optimus and Cybercab. Both depend on high-density AI inference chips at a cost structure that current foundry relationships — primarily TSMC — cannot deliver at the volumes Tesla needs. Bringing fabrication in-house, even partially, gives Tesla a lever over chip supply that it has never had before. If the 2028 timeline holds, Terafab output could begin flowing into Optimus units and Cybercab hardware just as those programs are expected to hit meaningful production scale.
