New details have emerged on one of the two Arizona solar PPAs: Tesla has confirmed it will purchase approximately 458 MW β roughly 90% of peak solar generation β from the Arizona solar-plus-battery project, specifically earmarked to supply its Supercharger network with additional renewable energy. The scale of this single offtake agreement underscores just how aggressively Tesla is locking in clean power for its fast-growing charging infrastructure. Notably, the deal covers the vast majority of the facility's output, signaling Tesla's intent to be the anchor buyer rather than a minor participant in the project.
Tesla Energy signed two long-term power purchase agreements on July 28, 2026 β one for a massive solar-plus-storage project in Arizona, another for a Texas solar farm. The deals add up to nearly 650 MW of new contracted renewable capacity and push Tesla's energy supply ambitions well into the next decade.

What exactly did Tesla sign?
Two separate power purchase agreements, announced the same day. The first is with ContourGlobal β a KKR-backed developer β for 90% of the output from Project Sterling, a 509 MWp (450 MWac) solar facility paired with 360 MW of four-hour battery storage (1.4 GWh total) in Arizona. The second is with Zelestra, an EQT-backed renewables company, for 100% of the output from the 140 MWac Lumen Farm solar project in northeast Texas. Neither company disclosed the financial terms of either deal.
How much electricity are we actually talking about?
Project Sterling alone is expected to generate more than 1.1 TWh of electricity annually once operational, according to ContourGlobal. To put that in perspective, 1 TWh can power roughly 90,000 average U.S. homes for a year. Lumen Farm at 140 MWac is a smaller project, but Tesla is buying its entire output β no partial stake. Combined, these two agreements represent a significant forward commitment to renewable supply.

When will these projects actually come online?
Project Sterling is the nearer-term deal. ContourGlobal says on-site construction is planned for 2026, with commercial operations targeted for Q1 2028. The Arizona plant will connect to the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) grid and carry firm transmission rights into California's CAISO market. Lumen Farm has a longer runway β Zelestra expects construction to begin in 2027, with full operations by 2029.
Is Tesla new to working with these developers?
Not entirely. The Zelestra deal is an expansion of an existing relationship: Tesla and Zelestra previously signed a 57 MWac PPA in 2024 for solar plants in Spain. The Lumen Farm agreement is notably larger and marks Zelestra's first contracted project in the United States with Tesla. The ContourGlobal partnership appears to be a new relationship, and Project Sterling will become ContourGlobal's largest renewable asset to date, according to the company.
What does this mean for Tesla Energy's broader strategy?
Tesla Energy has been scaling its Megapack and Powerwall businesses aggressively, but securing long-term power supply through PPAs signals a parallel push to control the energy input side of the equation β not just the storage and distribution hardware. Locking in multi-year contracts for renewable generation gives Tesla predictable, low-carbon electricity to support its growing grid-scale storage deployments, Supercharger network, and potentially future manufacturing energy needs. The Arizona project's firm transmission rights into CAISO are particularly notable, giving Tesla a direct pipeline into one of the most active electricity markets in the country.
What don't we know yet?
Pricing is the obvious gap β neither ContourGlobal nor Zelestra disclosed the financial terms of either agreement. The contract lengths are also undisclosed, though both were described as "long-term." It's also unclear whether Tesla intends to resell any of this electricity on wholesale markets or use it exclusively for its own operational needs. Those details may surface in Tesla's next earnings call or in regulatory filings as the projects move through permitting and construction.
