Tesla FSD Approved in Latvia: What Owners Need to Do

Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) — marketed in Europe as Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD) — has received official regulatory approval in Latvia, making it the tenth European Union member state to greenlight the system. The OTA rollout to customer vehicles is expected to begin shortly, with initial TAD test drives in Latvia anticipated this week.

Latvia joins the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia, and Slovakia — completing a sweep of all three Baltic states. The approval is grounded in the provisional European type approval issued by the Dutch Vehicle Certification Authority (RDW) back in April 2026, the same regulatory foundation underpinning every EU approval to date.

What Latvian Tesla Owners Should Do Right Now

The rollout arrives via an over-the-air update, so there's nothing to download manually — but there are a few steps worth taking today to make sure you're ready when it lands.

  1. Check your software version. Go to Controls → Software on your touchscreen. Make sure your car is on the latest available version. If an update is pending, install it now.
  2. Enable automatic updates. In Controls → Software → Software Update Preference, select Advanced. This ensures your car pulls the TAD-enabled build as soon as it's available for your VIN.
  3. Verify your Wi-Fi connection. OTA updates download fastest over Wi-Fi. Park within range of your home network and confirm the connection under Controls → Wi-Fi.
  4. Check your Tesla account for the subscription option. Once the update lands, TAD will appear in the Tesla app under Upgrades. The monthly subscription is priced at €99 in Latvia. You can also access it via Controls → Autopilot → Full Self-Driving (Supervised) on the touchscreen after the update installs.
  5. Complete the in-car onboarding. Before TAD activates on public roads, you'll be prompted to acknowledge a driver supervision agreement. Read it — it matters. You remain 100% legally responsible for the vehicle at all times.

What TAD Actually Does — and What It Doesn't

TAD is an SAE Level 2 driver assistance system. It handles steering, acceleration, and braking on a wide range of roads — city streets, highways, intersections — but it is not autonomous. Your hands must remain available to take over, and the cabin camera monitors driver attention continuously. If you look away for too long, the system will issue warnings and eventually disengage.

One detail worth knowing: following an understanding reached with Germany's transport ministry, the system may operate up to 10% above the posted speed limit, with the driver bearing full legal responsibility for that speed. This applies across EU approvals, not just Germany.

According to Tesla, vehicles using TAD in Europe have logged over 182 million kilometers since the system debuted in the Netherlands in April 2026, with the company reporting up to seven times fewer collisions per kilometer compared to manual driving.

The Bigger Picture for European Owners

Ten approvals is meaningful progress, but a full EU-wide greenlight still requires a qualified majority — at least 15 of 27 member states representing 65% of the EU's population. The ten countries approved so far account for roughly 14% of that population. Germany, France, Italy, and Spain — collectively about 58% of EU population — have not yet recognized the Dutch type approval. The EU Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles' December meeting is the earliest realistic window for a bloc-wide vote, according to reporting from multiple sources tracking the process.

For owners in the nine previously approved countries, nothing changes today. For Latvian owners, the wait is effectively over — check your update queue and get ready to enable TAD when the prompt appears on your screen.
