Tesla has officially crossed the 10,000 registered vehicles mark in Iceland, with Tesla Europe announcing the milestone on June 18, 2026. For a country of just 380,000 people, that number carries real weight — and it reflects just how dominant electric vehicles have become in one of the world's most EV-friendly markets.
Iceland has been one of Tesla's strongest European markets relative to its population for years. The brand launched sales there in September 2019, and by Q1 2020 had already become the best-selling car brand in the country. The momentum has only grown since: the Model Y topped Iceland's overall new car sales charts in 2025, with Tesla capturing a 13.1% market share following a 237.7% surge in registrations compared to the prior year, according to market data. In Q1 2026 alone, Icelandic Tesla registrations climbed another 28% year-over-year to 309 units.
The milestone is a natural fit for Iceland's geography and energy profile. The country runs almost entirely on renewable geothermal and hydroelectric power, making the case for EVs unusually compelling — both environmentally and economically. With a charging infrastructure that has kept pace with demand and a government policy environment that has long favored electrification, Iceland has functioned as something of a proving ground for what mass EV adoption looks like in practice.
Ten thousand Teslas on an island of under 400,000 people works out to roughly one Tesla for every 38 residents — a per-capita density that few markets anywhere in the world can match. The next question is how quickly the fleet grows from here, particularly as newer models and Full Self-Driving features continue rolling out across Europe.
