Tesla Model Y Is South Korea's Best-Selling Car in May 2026

The Tesla Model Y didn't just win the import segment in South Korea last month — it won the entire market. May 2026 data confirms the Model Y as the single best-selling vehicle in the country overall, a milestone that reflects just how dramatically Tesla's momentum has shifted in one of Asia's most competitive auto markets.

Tesla recorded 10,866 imported registrations for the month, with the Model Y Premium alone accounting for 7,195 units. The longer-wheelbase Model Y L Premium added another 1,513 units. BMW, the next closest brand, managed 6,555 units — less than two-thirds of Tesla's total. Mercedes-Benz trailed further behind at 3,553 units.

What makes these numbers more striking is the context behind them. According to verified sales data, this marks the third consecutive month Tesla has surpassed 10,000 units in South Korea's imported car market. Year-to-date through May, Tesla has moved 45,020 units — a 250.8% increase over the same period last year. The brand now holds a 30.8% share of the entire imported car segment for 2026. EVs as a category represented 48.6% of all imported passenger car registrations in May, a figure Tesla is clearly driving in large part.

South Korea has historically been a tough market for foreign automakers, with domestic brands holding strong loyalty. Tesla's ability to not only compete but dominate — across all brands, not just imports — signals a structural shift in how Korean buyers are approaching vehicle purchases. Whether that momentum holds through the second half of 2026 will be worth watching closely.
