Delta's Starlink Snub, Explained in 5 Points

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian has gone on record explaining why the carrier passed on Starlink for its in-flight Wi-Fi — and the reasoning goes deeper than a simple vendor preference. The short version: Delta has a deal with Amazon, a head start on free Wi-Fi, and a CEO who says the math just didn't work in Starlink's favor. Here's what you need to know.

1. Delta Already Considers Itself the Wi-Fi Pioneer

Bastian's core argument is that Delta moved first. The airline currently offers free Delta Sync Wi-Fi — presented by T-Mobile — to SkyMiles members across more than 1,200 aircraft, covering all domestic mainline flights. According to Delta, that free-Wi-Fi push forced competitors to follow suit. "We set that standard launching free, fast Wi-Fi that forced the industry to adopt it," Bastian said in the interview. "We're happy with where we sit." That's a confident posture from a carrier that sees itself as the standard-setter, not the follower.

2. Amazon Leo Is the Actual Replacement Plan

The real story behind the Starlink pass isn't that Delta is sticking with its current satellite providers forever — it's that the airline has already signed a long-term deal with Amazon to use its low Earth orbit network, called "Leo." Installation is planned to begin on 500 Delta aircraft starting in 2028. LEO satellite technology is the same underlying approach that gives Starlink its speed advantage, so Delta isn't avoiding the technology — it's just choosing a different vendor for it.

3. The Decision Was Commercial, Not Personal

Bastian was direct about dismissing the idea that Elon Musk's public profile played any role. "There's no tit-for-tat as far as I'm concerned," he said — and notably added that he drives a Tesla. The stated commercial rationale: Amazon Leo is expected to deliver "improved bandwidth with a much lower price point than what we've ever seen from Starlink." Delta also tested Starlink back in 2022, so this wasn't a decision made without due diligence. The airline ran the numbers and picked the cheaper, comparably fast option.

4. Amazon Brings Extras That Starlink Doesn't

Beyond raw connectivity pricing, Bastian pointed to the Amazon ecosystem as a differentiator. According to his comments, Amazon Leo offers "great retailing capability and Amazon Prime and video gaming technologies, which Starlink does not have." For an airline that generates meaningful ancillary revenue from in-flight entertainment and commerce, that integration matters. It's not just about getting passengers online — it's about what they do once they are.

5. The Competitive Gap Is Real and Growing

Delta's Amazon Leo rollout doesn't begin until 2028, which puts the airline in an awkward spot right now. United Airlines already has Starlink running on more than 600 aircraft and is targeting full-fleet coverage by late 2027, according to published reports. That's a meaningful window where United can credibly claim a connectivity edge — and some competing carriers have reportedly launched status match campaigns aimed directly at Delta flyers frustrated by the gap. Whether Amazon Leo's economics and ecosystem advantages prove worth the wait is a question Delta passengers will be living with for the next two-plus years.
