Giga Texas Test Track Takes Shape: Asphalt Down, Nearly Race-Ready

Tesla's on-site test track at Giga Texas is moving fast. Fresh drone footage shared this week shows significant asphalt coverage across the western portion of the main outer oval and portions of the inner track layout — a dramatic leap forward from the geotextile and earthwork phase visible just two months ago.

According to aerial observers tracking the site, the track is situated in the far southwest corner of the Giga Texas campus and features at least three distinct track configurations alongside a dedicated frontage road. Asphalt application began in earnest around May 6, signaling that underground stormwater drainage work had wrapped up. Even a stretch of heavy rain around May 11 only slowed — not stopped — progress, with the north and west outer sections and a smaller interior oval already paved before the weather hit.

The purpose of the facility is widely understood to be Cybercab validation and broader future vehicle development testing, giving Tesla the ability to run controlled on-site evaluations rather than shipping prototypes to external proving grounds. No official confirmation of the track's specifications has come from Tesla, but the consistent drone record from independent observers leaves little ambiguity about what's being built — or how quickly it's coming together.

With the outer oval largely paved and inner sections progressing, the remaining question is how soon Tesla begins active testing. A completed track at Giga Texas would put Cybercab development on a significantly tighter feedback loop — and that timeline is starting to look closer than many expected.
