Tesla didn't mention any of this in release notes β but code buried inside Tesla App v4.62.0, released October 21, 2026, tells a different story. A teardown by The Tesla Newswire surfaced four meaningful changes that haven't been officially announced, the most significant being a full engine swap for the app's 3D vehicle model.

1. The 3D Vehicle Model Is Moving to Unreal Engine
This is the headline find. According to the code teardown, the interactive 3D car model inside the Tesla app β the one you tap to control lights, unlock doors, and check charge status β is migrating from the open-source Godot Engine to Epic Games' Unreal Engine. The expected payoff: higher fidelity visuals, more realistic reflections, smoother animations, and a look that finally matches what owners see on their in-car display.
That last point matters more than it sounds. Right now there's a visible gap between the polished Unreal-powered visualization on the car's screen and the comparatively flat model in the app. This change closes it. According to background research, Tesla officially confirmed Unreal Engine powers in-car visualizations for 2017+ Model 3, 2020+ Model Y, and 2021+ Model S/X β so the app is simply catching up to hardware that already runs it.
2. This Is Part of a Multi-Year Engine Transition
The Godot-to-Unreal shift didn't start with v4.62.0. Evidence of Unreal Engine integration first surfaced in firmware 2025.20, with binaries initially targeting AMD-based vehicles. An earlier app update β v4.49.5 in October 2025 β included a flag called isUsingUnrealApViz, hinting that some vehicles were already using Unreal for Autopilot visualizations. The Spring 2026 update (2026.14.1) made the in-car visual upgrade tangible for owners, with further refinements in 2026.14.6.6. The app's 3D model is the last major piece of the puzzle.

3. FSD V14 Gets Hands-Free Mileage Tracking and Badges
Also buried in the code: FSD V14 hands-free mileage tracking, plus a badge system tied to it. This suggests Tesla is building a gamification layer around hands-free driving β likely to encourage engagement with FSD V14's expanded no-intervention capability and give owners a tangible record of their autonomous miles. No official rollout date has been announced, but the infrastructure is clearly being staged in the app ahead of a public launch. For more on FSD developments, see our FSD coverage.
4. New Referral Coin Images Round Out the Update
The teardown also flagged updated referral coin imagery inside the app. It's a minor cosmetic refresh to Tesla's referral program assets β not a structural change to how the program works β but it signals the referral system is getting a visual refresh alongside the broader app upgrade cycle.

None of these changes are live for users yet β they were found in hidden code, not active features. The Unreal Engine model upgrade in particular is likely staged for a future app release once rendering performance is validated across device types. Watch the all software updates feed for when these surface officially.
